Manchester United’s success has seldom been so deflating, particularly in a cup semi-final.
That’s precisely what happened when United lost a 3-0 lead and had to go to penalties before prevailing 4-2 to go to the FA Cup final.
Championship side. Coventry City once again exposed United’s deficiencies, and although the typical suspects were all dreadful and maintained their dismal run, this game will most likely be remembered as the one that sealed a player’s destiny.
Erik ten Hag’s management destiny may have been determined, but Aaron Wan-Bissaka now seems to be joining him.
He had a horrible performance against second-tier opponents, exacerbated by Ten Hag’s decision to put him on the left.
The fact that he surrendered a silly penalty was the cherry on top of an already disappointing effort.
He lost possession 15 times, which is a concerning statistic for a defensive player since losing the ball there essentially allows the opponent to attack freely.
Wan-Bissaka became a black hole in attack when Ten Hag moved him to left-back.
Because of his superior right foot, he seized the ball and switched to his right, breaking the flow of the assault.
His presence on the overlap became ineffective since the opposition knew they could stand off him with no repercussions if he didn’t cross it the first time.
He only won four of his seven ground duels because, particularly in the second half, it seemed like Coventry had an additional player on the field.
Add to that his discomfort playing out of the back, and he stood out like a sore thumb on the few occasions when United had the fortitude to move the ball.
Overall, United’s performance shown that they have accepted mediocrity and are unable to use that right.
If INEOS is serious about reforming the culture at Old Trafford, Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s destiny as a United player may have been determined.
