Manchester United is contemplating selling players they would rather retain due to the Premier League’s regulations on profitability and sustainability.
United is honest about the value of their roster’s tradeable assets and knows they won’t get much for players who have become ancillary to the team’s success.
United will let out-of-contract players like Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Victor Lindelof go for reasonable prices, and they are receptive to bids for most of their players.
United have maintained a position somewhat similar to last year’s, when they said again that they were happy to retain Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire but would listen to bids for either player.
While West Ham United’s deal for McTominay was turned down, their offer for Maguire was approved for £30 million. Maguire stayed put because United couldn’t come up with a fair compensation for the pay gap.
Among United’s few good performances this season, Maguire and McTominay are nearing the end of their contracts. Both players’ contracts give United the option to extend their contracts by one more year.
To the PSR, McTominay would be nothing more than a profit because of his academy training. Scotland will start the 27-year-old midfielder at the European Championship because he has scored 10 goals this season, which is a career high.
In the loan agreements for Donny van de Beek and Hannibal Mejbri, United included buy-back options, and Benfica is obligated to purchase Alvaro Fernandez when he plays a certain amount of games on loan.
During the transfer window, Manchester United were ready to sell players they wanted to retain.
While Menjbri has started once for Sevilla and has been a spectator in their last six games, Van de Beek has started four times for Eintracht Frankfurt but has failed to finish any of those matches. For Benfica, Fernandez has made 10 appearances.
Marcus Rashford has had a disastrous season, with his form plummeting, manager Erik ten Hag disciplining him twice, and tensions rising between Rashford and the fans. But United insiders have said they’d rather retain him than sell him, and few teams could match Rashford’s £325,000 weekly wage.
United want to bring in three important players this summer, with the number of new arrivals depending on the departures of existing players.
