United have closed agreement with sensational La Liga shot stopper to replace unsteady Onana – report

Real Madrid custodian Andriy Lunin has signed a deal with Manchester United.

After academy product Dean Henderson and icon David de Gea both departed the club in the summer, the goalkeeping department got a major overhaul.

Andre Onana arrived from Inter Milan, while Altay Bayindir was acquired from Fenerbahce to serve as his understudy.

Onana has certainly not had the first season he had hoped for, despite making an impression in other areas.

The fact that he has let in 75 goals in all competitions this season—including the FA Cup final—provides sufficient proof of this.

While a poor defence is certain to be a problem for any custodian, Onana has made some huge mistakes, most notably handing away a penalty against Burnley last Saturday.

Conversely, Lunin has had a fantastic season while Real Madrid is edging closer to a league championship and another Champions League final.

While Thibaut Courtois has been sidelined with an injury for the whole season, the Ukrainian has done an outstanding job for his team.

Prior to Easter, rumours circulated that United were interested in the custodian.

United have “closed an agreement” with the custodian and have made him a summer priority, according to Spanish publication Nacional (via Football 365).

As far as anybody can tell, “Florentino Perez’s attempts have been fruitless” in Real Madrid’s efforts to get a new contract extension for the custodian.

According to the source, Madrid would have little choice but to sell him this summer if they are unable to come to terms with his contract renewal, which is set to expire in 2025.

Therefore, “the Ukrainian international will likely join United as one of the big favourites.” The article also claims that Erik ten Hag has promised Lunin “that he will be untouchable” and United’s new starting quarterback, which is an intriguing development.

Because they are unable to guarantee him such a position, the news source claims he has chosen to depart Madrid.

Even though Lunin has had a stellar season, the report’s authenticity remains questionable. Even if United may sign a custodian to replace Bayindir if he departs, it’s doubtful that he’d be a major name and even more unlikely that he’d be assured a spot in the starting lineup after only one season.
