At the international level, the former England captain collaborated with Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, and Harry Kane; at the club level, he was involved with Robin van Persie, Carlos Tevez, and Ryan Giggs when at Manchester United.
When asked by The Overlap to choose the greatest player he has ever played alongside, Rooney had an intriguing response.
While Rooney did say that Cristiano Ronaldo was the finest player he had ever played with, he also mentioned Paul Scholes.
As a Sky Sports commentator, Wayne Rooney was present at Old Trafford on May 12 for the Premier League encounter between Manchester United and Arsenal FC.
In the same league as Cristiano Ronaldo and Paul Scholes
Scholes and Ronaldo were named by Rooney as the two greatest players he had ever collaborated with.
“Having played with the greatest player of all time?” Questioned was Rooney.
“Ronaldo, hands down, in terms of ability, but I’d also have to mention Scholesy, the contributions that Scholes made to the team. But if I had to choose, I’d say Ronaldo, hands down.”
Ronaldo, Cristiano, is on a whole other level
Although Paul Scholes is a legend in the Premier League, he can never be compared to Cristiano Ronaldo
While the midfielder has had his moments, Ronaldo is really a unique athlete with legitimate claims to the title of best player of all time.
Even at over 40 years of age, he continues to shatter Saudi Arabian goalscoring records; he has scored more goals than nearly everyone who has ever put on a pair of boots.
Even Scholes, who was a great footballer in his own right, would have to concede that Ronaldo is on a whole other level for almost every Premier League player who has ever played. Very few players in the game’s history can compare to Ronaldo.
If Scholes is second-best, it’s by a wide margin; Ronaldo is Rooney’s finest player ever.
