With Erik ten Hag at the helm, Alejandro Garnacho has had a breakout season for Manchester United.
Alejandro Garnacho’s consistency was a huge asset to Manchester United during a season plagued by injuries.
On Saturday, he scored his tenth goal of the season, making him the youngest player to achieve so since Cristiano Ronaldo in the FA Cup Final. Just minutes later, another academy player, Kobbie Mainoo, accomplished the same thing.
Now more than ever, Garnacho and Mainoo could need a break. Regrettably, it seems like that will not be occurring very soon.
While Garnacho will be participating in the Copa America with Argentina, Mainoo will be representing his country in Euro 2024. An additional layer of complexity has emerged.
Olympic hopeful Alejandro Garnacho sought after
On the same dates as Euro 2024, the Copa America event begins and ends on July 14. On July 15, Manchester United will play their first preseason match.
Garnacho may not be able to rejoin United until the opening game in the US on July 27, since he would have further time off if Argentina made it to the final.
The situation has become more complicated, however, since Javier Mascherano, coach of the Argentina under-23 national team, has made it clear that he wants Garnacho to be a part of the 2024 Olympic team.
Argentine media outlet TNT Sports reports that Garnacho’s release from Manchester United has been requested.
‘A decision is pending,’ the article says, suggesting the Red Devils have not yet made a choice.
It is difficult to determine if United would refuse Garnacho the opportunity to compete in the Olympics. At Wembley, the kid drew attention to himself by covering himself in the Argentine flag in celebration of his FA Cup victory—a move he repeated following his FA Youth Cup triumph in 2022—demonstrating his pride in his origin.
The good news is that Argentina will not be calling up Lisandro Martinez, one of the three overage players. The players in question are Emiliano Martinez, Julian Alvarez, and Nicolas Otamendi.
On what dates is the Olympic football competition held?
July 24–August 10 is the duration of the Olympic football event. Many people think Argentina has what it takes to win the match.
As a result, Garnacho will sit out all preseason games, including August’s Community Shield.
With the 2024–25 Premier League season starting on the weekend of August 17, he would not miss a single game.
But when precisely could Garnacho get some sleep? That’s the glaring problem.
He will be joining up with Argentina in preparation for the Copa America in a few days. There is some solace in the fact that he does not often start games. He has five caps overall, however he has only played five minutes in a competitive game and has only started one.
At the tender age of 19, Garnacho has already amassed 86 appearances for Manchester United. That’s a huge sum.
Thankfully, Marcus Rashford will be able to relax this summer. Unlike Garnacho, who should make the most of his little week off while he can, he should be fresh for next season.
