In the 2024–25 Europa League, Tottenham is likely to be one of the favourites to win. After Ange Postecoglou’s squad qualified for UEFA’s second club tournament by placing fifth in the Premier League, they will compete in a very different Europa League starting in September.
Teams who make it to the knockout round of the revamped Europa League will participate in a 36-team league beginning next season, rather than the four-team groups that were previously used. Each of the eight teams will face a new challenge: advancing to the round of 16. The top eight will go straight to that stage, while the teams ranked ninth through twenty-four will face off in the elimination round play-offs.
When it comes to the Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League, everyone is going to be watching the new structure. Joining Spurs and 12 other teams already confirmed for the Europa League league phase are Manchester United, who defeated Man City in the FA Cup final and are also Premier League clubs.
Hoffenheim, Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad, Eintracht Frankfurt, Roma, Lazio, Nice, Lyon, AZ, and Porto are among the other clubs who have already qualified for the league phase. The victory in Wednesday’s Europa Conference League final ensures Olympiacos’ spot in the Europa League for the next season.
But starting in September, Eintracht Frankfurt still has a shot of becoming a Champions League contender. Borussia Dortmund, a German club, will get the opportunity to compete in Europe’s top tournament in 2024–25 if they beat Real Madrid in Saturday’s Champions League final.
On Friday, August 30, Spurs will find out who they will play in the Europa League against at the league phase draw. Each of the 36 teams will play in one of four nine-team groups determined by their coefficient rankings.
After that, two teams from each pot will be picked to play each other; one of these matches will be played at home, while the other will be played away. So, in the run-up to the round of 16, this establishes the eight league matches that each side will play.
So, in the Europa League league phase draw, which pot will Tottenham be drawn from? It seems like Spurs will be in pot 1 for the August draw, given the pots are determined by coefficient standings.
At this moment, only five clubs have a higher coefficient rating than the Lilywhites (54,000). These teams are: Roma (101,000), Manchester United (92,000), Porto (77.000), and Eintracht Frankfurt (60.000). With a coefficient of 54,000, Lazio is likewise predicted to finish in pot 1, same to Tottenham.
Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad, Hoffenheim, Nice, AZ, and Olympiacos all have pots that have yet to be decided. Given that Spurs will be facing two clubs from pot 1, Postecoglou’s squad may face some challenging matches, especially given the current top-pot teams.
Roberto De Zerbi’s note to Chelsea’s potential new manager reveals his desire to play in the Premier League.
Prior to the draw, Tottenham’s head coach will be looking to strengthen his team via the summer transfer market in order to compete at a high level in the Premier League and three cup tournaments. Timo Werner made Spurs history on Tuesday, signing a one-year loan contract to return from RB Leipzig for the 2024–25 season.
