Amad Diallo (born July 11, 2002), sometimes known as Amad, is an Ivorian professional footballer who plays as a winger or midfielder for Premier League club Manchester United and the Ivory Coast national team.
Amad was born in the Ivory Coast and moved to Italy as a child. He joined Atalanta’s junior system in 2015, and he won two Campionato Primavera 1 titles.
In 2019, he scored on his senior debut, becoming the first player born in 2002 to score in Serie A. In January 2021, Amad joined Manchester United, an English team.
Amad made his senior international debut for the Ivory Coast in March 2021, during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualification game.
Early life
Amad was born in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, and relocated to Italy when he was very young. He joined Boca Barco’s youth team in September 2014, and he shined at the same year’s Christmas tournament, scoring the most goals as the youngest player on the field.
On January 14, 2015, Amad was officially registered with the team.
Club career
Atalanta
Amad joined Atalanta in 2015 after several Serie A clubs expressed interest in him while he was at Boca Barco.
Despite debuting with the under-14s during the 2015-16 season, Amad rapidly advanced to the under-15 team.
He competed in the Final Eight, scoring against Roma in the final and helping his team win the league title.
He began his career with the under-15s in 2016-17 before progressing to the under-17s in 2017-18, where he scored 12 goals in 27 games. In 2018-19, Amad scored 12 goals and seven assists in 16 under-17 games, as well as six goals and six assists in 26 games in the Campionato Primavera 1 (under-19 tournament).
He won the 2018-19 season with Atlanta. In 2019, Amad won the Supercoppa Primavera with two assists in a 2-1 victory over Fiorentina.
In 25 league games, he scored six goals and assisted six times, helping Atalanta win the Campionato Primavera 1 for the second consecutive season in 2019-20.
Amad made his Serie A debut on October 27, 2019, coming on as a 79th-minute replacement against Udinese and scoring his first goal four minutes later in a 7-1 home victory.
He became the first player born in 2002 to score in Italy’s top division. His first UEFA Champions League call-up occurred on December 11, 2019, as an unused replacement in a 3-0 away victory over Shakhtar Donetsk.
Amad’s first league game of the 2020-21 season came on November 28, 2020, as a 77th-minute replacement against Hellas Verona; Atalanta lost 2-0 at home.
On December 1, Amad made his Champions League debut, coming on as a substitute in the 68th minute against Midtjylland in a 1-1 home draw.
Manchester United
On October 5, 2020, Manchester United agreed to sign Amad in January 2021, subject to personal terms, a medical, and the issuance of a work permit.
The rumored fee was €25 million to €40 million, including bonuses. Amad officially started on January 7, 2021, on a five-year deal with the option for an additional year.
Amad scored twice on his Under-23 debut, a 6-3 victory over Liverpool on January 30. He was initially called up to the senior team on February 9th, as an unused substitute in an FA Cup fifth round encounter against West Ham United, which Manchester United won 1-0 after extra time.
On February 18, Amad made his first-team debut for United, replacing Mason Greenwood in a 4-0 away win over Real Sociedad in the first leg of the Europa League round of 32 encounter.
His first goal for United occurred on March 11th, in a 1-1 home draw against AC Milan in the first leg of the Europa League round of 16 match.
On March 13, Amad was named to the IFFHS’ 2020 CAF Youth Team of the Year (U20). He made his FA Cup debut on March 21, coming on as an 84th-minute replacement in a 3-1 loss to Leicester City in the quarterfinals.
On May 11, Amad made his Premier League debut against Leicester City, assisting Mason Greenwood’s goal in a 2-1 loss.
This was the first time in 15 years that a teenager helped another for a Premier League goal.
Amad started his debut game of the 2021-22 season on December 8, 2021, in the UEFA Champions League group stage against Young Boys.
Amad was loaned to Scottish Premiership team Rangers on January 27, 2022, for the duration of the 2021-22 season.
He made his debut on January 29, scoring the game’s opening goal as a starter in a 3-3 away draw against Ross County.
On August 31, 2022, Amad joined Sunderland in the EFL Championship on a season-long loan. He scored his first goal for Sunderland on October 22, in a 4-2 home loss to Burnley.
Amad received the EFL Young Player of the Month title for December after scoring three goals in five games.
Amad concluded the season with 14 goals and four assists in all competitions, including a 25-yard free kick in the play-off semi-final against Luton Town.
He made his first appearance for United in almost two years on December 30, 2023, as a substitute in a 2-1 defeat against Nottingham Forest.
On March 17, 2024, Amad scored the winning goal as a substitute in a 4-3 FA Cup quarter-final victory over Liverpool in 2023-24. Amad received a second yellow card and was sent off for removing his shirt in celebration.
International career
Amad was first called up to the Ivory Coast national team on March 18, 2021, for their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Niger and Ethiopia on March 26 and 30, respectively.
He made his debut against Niger, entering as an 86th-minute substitute. On June 5, 2021, Amad scored his first international goal in a friendly against Burkina Faso, a 97th-minute free kick that helped his country win 2-1 at home.
On July 3, 2021, Amad was nominated for Ivory Coast’s under-23 team for the 2020 Summer Olympics.
On July 22, Amad made his Olympic debut, assisting on a goal in a 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia. He made four appearances in the competition.
