Some of the biggest clubs in European football are apparently vying with Aston Villa for the signature of one of Germany’s most promising young players.

Bayern Munich backed out of their pursuit of Schalke midfielder Assan Ouedraogo, who was thought to be on his way to the Bundesliga giants. The 18-year-old’s camp was reportedly notified of Bayern’s decision this morning, according to Sky Sports Germany.

Rumour has it that Villa are interested in signing Ouedraogo, which means the competition to get him is now open. Premier League teams are have to trigger his £12 million release clause by the middle of June.

The teenager has drawn interest from many English premier league teams, including Manchester United, Newcastle, and Liverpool. Frankfurt and RB Leipzig, two German clubs, are also interested in Ouedraogo and are hoping to convince him to join their ranks.

Ouedraogo played in 17 games for Schalke in the 2. Bundesliga past season, contributing to five goals (three scored and two assisted). A ligament problem kept him out for much of the season.

Last summer, he was a part of Christian Wuck’s winning German Under-17 team that defeated France 5-4 on penalties in the European Championships in Budapest.
