The Red Devils will be on the hunt for a new centre back this summer, and they could have to bring in more than one.
Following his rejection of a transfer to West Ham United last summer, Harry Maguire fought his way back, rescuing his United career.
However, elsewhere, issues arise, such as the uncertain future of Victor Lindelof and the probable summer departure of Raphael Varane.
Before the year 2024 even began, it seems like a major priority to find a right-footed centre defender to combine with Lisandro Martinez.
Martinez has had a rough season owing to injuries, thus United could have to bring in two central defenders.
To solidify the starting position for the future, one centre defender would be a right-footer, while the other would be a left-footer to provide competition and protection for Martinez.
The amount of central defenders being connected indicates that defence is a primary priority for Ineos, however it is unknown how much money the club would be prepared to spend on those two acquisitions.
Bayern Munich may release Dayot Upamecano, who is wanted by Manchester United.
Dayot Upamecano is one of the several names that have been brought forward.
Upamecano, a defender for Bayern Munich, was reportedly one of many centre backs whom United were interested in signing in March.
The timing could be perfect for the Frenchman to eventually join Manchester United, since he has been suggested by Rio Ferdinand in the past.
The sky According to Florian Plettenberg of Germany, Bayern Munich is interested in signing Jonathan Tah, a centre defender currently playing for Bayer Leverkusen.
But before Bayern can get Tah, they need to trade a defender, and Plettenberg says Upamecano is a possible target.
With players like Matthijs de Ligt, Eric Dier, and Kim Min-jae already on the squad, Upamecano’s playing time has been unpredictable nonetheless.
That increases the likelihood of United being tempted to make a play for the Frenchman.
Upamecano sparks heated debate
Bayern paid £37 million to acquire Upamecano in 2021 because he seemed to be developing into a great defender while playing for RB Leipzig.
His inconsistent performances and lack of game-changing ability have caused the Frenchman to split fans.
One example is Upamecano, who, in the span of four days in February, succeeded in having himself expelled twice.
After receiving a red card in a Champions League match against Lazio, he was sent off in a shocking 3-2 loss to Bochum.
Since then, Upamecano has made only five appearances, starting just once.
Although United would be understandably enticed by Upamecano’s physical characteristics, we suspect that there could be better centre back choices available now that Bayern is ready to let him go.
