After signing with Manchester United regretted decision and wanted to quit after my first training session

After joining Manchester United from Arsenal in January 2018, Alexis Sanchez expressed a desire to go almost immediately after his arrival.

Alexis Sanchez’s January 2018 transfer from Arsenal to Manchester United sparked a frenzy, since he had scored 38 goals since the start of the 2016–17 season.

The Chilean, who had previously signed with Barcelona in 2014, became a United player in a trade that also sent Henrikh Mkhitaryan flying in the other way. With a winger who had been prolific for over 18 months at their disposal, it was clear that United had won the trade.

After netting nine goals in the first half of the 2017–18 season, seven of which came in the Premier League, Sanchez joined the club for a price of fourteen million pounds. As a matter of fact, the cost was little considering the reliability of the objectives it provided.

I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to play at such a legendary venue and collaborate with Jose Mourinho. I want to prove to United’s global fan base why the club was so eager to get me, and I take great pride in becoming the club’s first-ever Chilean player.

The last chapter of Sanchez’s United career came in August 2020, after 2.5 years, one loan term, and 45 games, when he was granted permission to join Inter Milan, the club with whom he had previously been on loan, on a free transfer. Nobody remembers his brief stay at Old Trafford with any pleasure since he was so unimpressive. When United beat Tottenham Hotspur in the 2018 FA Cup semi-final, he scored the equalizer, which was his crowning achievement.

Despite spending his only full season donning United jersey, he managed just five goals for the club. Three of his goals came in the preseason. Under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he had trouble securing a starting position, and he only made 27 appearances that season (2018–19).

Before Sanchez signed with United, Manchester City had shown interest in signing him. However, the Blues backed out of the deal due to Sanchez’s pay demands. Because of this, United had an open window to sign him.

However, Sanchez was not very enthusiastic about moving to Old Trafford, to the point that he considered leaving after only one training session at Carrington, despite the words he selected when he was unveiled. The now-35-year-old Chilean told his agent he pleaded with him to find a way to go back to Arsenal a month after he left the Reds.

The striker, who is now on his third stint at Inter, made the following statement in September 2020: “I accepted the opportunity to go to United, it felt tempting and it was something good for me. I liked this club a lot when I was a kid. It was something good for me.” I joined up in the end, but I never inquired about the club’s inner workings.

When you first start training, there are a lot of things you don’t know until you’re there. I learned a lot in that first session. ‘Can you not break up the contract to go back to Arsenal?’ I asked my family and agency after the session.

I told them something wasn’t right and that it didn’t seem good, and they laughed. However, I was already present when I signed. I felt the same way even after the first few months had passed; at that time, we weren’t a cohesive unit.

United were on a four-game winning streak and had not lost in seven when Sanchez arrived at Old Trafford, so he should have walked into a lively, enthusiastic, and positive camp. Instead, his remarks suggested that he entered a disjointed and disintegrating dressing room.

The United and Burnley match ended in a tie.
Following his midseason arrival in 2017/18, Sanchez played in 18 games until the conclusion of the season. He helped United finish second in the Premier League and reach the FA Cup final, but they were defeated by Chelsea at Wembley, with a first-half penalty by Eden Hazard deciding the outcome.

United benched Sanchez for their match against West Ham United, which took place little over one month into the 2018–19 season. It was a shocking move by Mourinho, and the winger felt the effects.

Under heavy pressure, Manchester United may reverse Erik ten Hag’s decision.
To go from being a top Premier League player to sitting out for five months is astonishing. It was with a heavy heart that I returned to my home. Since I take great pride in my work, the next day I put in extra hours at the gym.

One of the most disastrous moves in Premier League history was Sanchez’s move from Arsenal to United. As a result of Mkhitaryan’s somewhat stronger stats—nine goals and thirteen assists—Arsenal received the better bargain.

Inter Milan currently has the Armenian and Sanchez on the field. United fans are unlikely to remember either of them with much fondness.
